Russell, Nov. 26, 1937-Nov. 11, 1939 Editor: Description: The Bay Roberts Guardian featured local, provincial and foreign news, public notices, personal and social news, proceedings of the legislature, and fishing and shipping news. Under the editorship of C.E. Russell (1877-1937), the paper reflected his involvement in politics. In 1913, the editorials were extremely pro-Morris, supporting the People's party and opposing Coaker. The paper expressed opposition to Confederation at that time. In 1915, more independence for the outports from the influence of St. John's was advocated. In 1923, Russell was snubbed by the Opposition Party which he had previously supported. The editorial policy of Guardian abruptly changed sides and supported the Liberals under Richard Squires. The paper sided with the Monroe government in 1924 and the editor was appointed Minister of Public Works. In 1926, the editor resigned that office and became a neutral, resigning from politics in 1928. The paper became less political beginning in the late 1920's, focusing on local issues such as the need for breakwaters and traffic control. Still mildly supportive of the government, the editorials ran to political philosophizing, frequently decrying public apathy. The paper had a neutral attitude toward the Commission of Government at first, but by 1937 became extremely critical of its shortcomings. The Guardian supported Confederation in 1948.

| The death of Mrs. FLIGHT, who resided at Chelsea, Mass., occurred at that place sometime ago. Mrs. Flight was formerly Miss BERTHA RUSSELL, of Country Road. Deceased was afflicted with the dread disease consumption, and knowing there was no hope for her, she longed for the end to come. She was buried by the Ladies True Blue Lodge, of which she was a member. It was only a short time previous to her brother killed by falling from a building and another brother at the same time received severe injuries. | |

| The remains of WILLIAM JOHN FRENCH, son of Mr. John French, of Coley's Point, was brought home by Tuesday's express. The deceased was accidentally killed while following his occupation in the lumber woods in the state of Maine. | |
| Obituary - Mr. ISAAC DAWE - Death came on Sunday, Jan. 9, 1910 to Mr. Isaac Dawe, a very old and respected resident of Long Beach Pond, near Bareneed. He had reached the advanced age of 97 years and up to the time of his demise enjoyed perfect health. Deceased belonged to that old stock of hardy fishermen who contributed of their substance and strength in making this country what she is today. He prosecuted that avocation for many years on the Labrador and Western shore. He was a member of the Church of England. Deceased leaves three sons, three daughters and 96 grand children and great-grand children. The funeral took place on Tuesday, Jan. 11. | |

Interment took place at the Church of England Cemetery on Tuesday, Aug. 8th. This is a severe blow to the parents, who lost a son, JOHN, aged 19 years, only a few years ago. |

| Friday, January 26, 1912 | Wedding Bells - On December 29th, at Christ Church, Bonavista, Dr. JOS. RICHARDS, graduate of Toronto University, and formerly of Bareneed, was united in the bonds of Holy Matrimony to MAY, eldest daughter of R. BROWN, Esq., H.M.C. of this town, the officiating clergyman being Rev. A.G. Bayley, M.A., R.D. She was attended by her sister, Miss HILDA BROWN. The groom was supported by Mr. WALTER RENDELL, of St. John's. Immediately after the reception, the happy couple took the train for Trinity, to join the Prospero for Greenspond, their future home. (The groom's present to the bride was a pendant of amethyst and pearls. |
| Death - Venerable Lady Dies at 93. - The Angle of Death visited Indian Islands, Fogo District, on Dec. 26th, St. Stephen's Day, and summoned forth to the realms of Everlasting Bless, Mrs. SHEPPARD who had reached the ripe age of 93 years, leaving six sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. Deceased was born in Spaniard's Bay in 1819, the year in which the late lamented Queen Victoria the Good first saw the light, her father being the late Mr. HENRY SMITH, who was a well known sailmaker of that town and helped to make and mend many a suit of sails for the great fleet of sailing vessels that sailed from Spaniard's Bay and Bay Roberts to the seal fishery in the good old prosperous days that Conception Bay saw when the seal fishery flourished. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren number 105. Messrs. JON. MARSHALL, of this town, JOHN SMITH of Ingram, JOHN SMITH of John, Bishop's Cove, and Mrs. COSTELLO and Mrs. ANTHONY, of Spaniard's Bay, are nephews of the deceased. | |
| Death - At Shearston, Jan. 3rd, 1912, CLARINDER, beloved wife of Mr. W.C. FRY, passed away. Her death came as a shock to her husband and many friends of Shearston, as she was a very robust and healthy woman all her lifetime. Mrs. Fry always had perfect health until Dec. 27th, 1911, when she was ordered to bed by the doctor with an attack of measles, a day or two after a baby boy being born to her. She seemed to be getting on alright until Wednesday, 3rd inst., when she showed signs of death, and the same night, after all means head been used to save her life, she passed to the Great Beyond. Mr. and Mrs. Fry were married 14 years ago, and have always lived happy. About 10 years ago Mrs. Fry was converted, and has always since done her best for the Master. She was a member of the C. of E., also a communicant, and took delight in attending church. The funeral took place on Friday, Jan. 5th, interment being at the C. of E. Cemetery. She leaves to mourn their loss an almost heart broken husband, 5 children (1 girl and 4 boys), also a widowed mother, this being her only child, and one adopted brother. | |

| The death occurred at Greenspond on Monday last, May 20th of ROBERT WHITEMARSH, father of Rev. C.A. Whitemarsh of Central Methodist Church. He had been ill for 12 months with heart trouble and during the last two months was obliged to keep his bed. He had reached that ripe age of 74 years. He was an Orangeman - the oldest member of the Association in Greenspond and one of the men who organized the lodge at that place and a member of the Methodist Church. | Friday, November 1, 1912 | Halifax Chronicle - A very pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Whitman, of this town, when her sister, Miss BLANCHE McLAINE, daughter of D.A. McLaine, superintendent of the Western Union Cable Company, Bay Roberts, Nfld., was united in marriage to WALTER J. PRENDERGAST, of London, at present on the staff of the Commercial Cable Staff, Hazel Hill. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Benjamin Hills, of the Methodist Church. Miss Edith Newham was bridesmaid, with Miss Evelyn Whitman, niece of the bride, acting as flower girl. The groom was unattended. After the wedding breakfast, the happy couple took passage on the steamer Robert G. Cann for Mulgrave, en route for Boston and New York. They will be home in Canso later in November. |

| Friday, June 27, 1913 | Victim Dead - SAMUEL HUTCHINGS, who was stabbed last week by PATRICK CLARKE on Smith's wharf in St. John's, passed away on Sunday. The knife entered his bowels and blood entered his stomach and his liver was gashed. CLARKE is in jail and will be charged with murder. CLARKE had been drinking lately. Mr. HUTCHINGS belonged formerly to Spaniard's Bay. The people of Spaniard's Bay are much stirred up over the stabbing which ended fatally on Sunday last. |

Deceased, who had been ill for nearly two years, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13th, and the funeral took place to the C. of E. Cemetery, Shearstown, on Monday, Sept. 15th. About 11 years ago he had his foot hurt while working at Sydney, and afterward had to have it amputated. He was unmarried. | Obituary - Mr. PATRICK HORNEY, an old and respected resident of Bay Roberts passed away very suddenly on Monday last. Leaving home early in the morning, he drove to Harbor Grace with a horse and cart to pack and bring to Bay Roberts some furniture belonging to a sister-in-law, Miss DORMODY, who intended going to Boston shortly. He was in the act of bringing out a valise when he fell to the ground. He was lifted up and taken into the house and shortly afterwards he expired. Dr. Strapp and Rev. Fr. Walker were immediately summoned. The doctor after examining the man pronounced death due to heart failure. A message was immediately sent to Rev. Dr. Whelan who broke the news to the family. He leaves to mourn their loss a wife and three daughters. The funeral took place in Bay Roberts to the R.C. Cemetery. | |
| Boy Drowned - On Friday, Sept. 12th, BEN, the 14 year old son of SAMUEL MORGAN, was drowned at Blow-Me-Down, near Port de Grave. Nobody knows how he happened to be drowned. His father on returning from the fishing ground that day, noticed a cap floating in the water near his fishing stage, and on looking down saw the body of his son lying on the bottom. Funeral took place on Saturday. | |

| A man named PATRICK HANLON, of St. Mary's, was killed at Bell Island on Friday last. He was at work on the surface in the Scotia mines operating an electric plow when some earth loosened quickly and fell on him fracturing his shoulder, breaking both legs above the knees and the left leg below the knees, while he received other internal injuries. | |

| Obituary - Capt. STEPHEN PARSONS, at the adcanced age of 94 years. His death occurred on Sunday, May 3rd, after an illness lasing only a few weeks. The deceased is survived by three sons - William, Stephen and Isaac, and four daughters, Mrs. Chas. Calpin, Mrs. John Dawe, Mrs. (Capt.) Henry Dawe, and Mrs. Geo. Mallan of Heart's Content, 26 great grandchildren and 42 grandchildren. The funeral took place to the C. of E. Cemetery, Coley's Pt. On Tuesday, May 5th, when the remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife, who had predeceased him by 12 years. | |
| Obituary - The silent watches of the night were broken at midnight on Thursday, April 30th, in her home, when the sobbing parents of BESSIE MERCER, aged 19 years and 7 months, beloved daughter of WM. CHARLES and ELIZABETH MERCER, saw their loved one pass peacefully away to her eternal reward. Her demise came suddenly and unexpectedly to her relatives and friends. Although she had been ailing for a year, she bore up bravely under her affliction and performed her duties as postmistress until within five days before the call came to her. She was confined to her bed but one day, and died of rapid consumption, proceeding from an attack of bronchial trouble which resulted from a heavy cold she contracted about a year ago. Bessie was a member of Central Church Choir and Sunshine Band, and also an active worker in the Sunday School. She had been employed at the Guardian Office for about two years. In November, 1912, she was appointed postmistress at Mercer's Cove. On Monday she was laid to rest in the Methodist Cemetery. There is left to mourn their sad loss a father, mother, three brothers and an infant sister. | |

| Obituary - After an illness lasting only a few days, EMMIE SPARKS, aged 20 years, beloved daughter of EDWARD and ANNIE SPARKS, of French's Cove, passed peacefully away on May 2nd, in the Eye and Ear Hospital, at Boston, Mass. The cause of her death was the formation of an abcess behind her ear. Deceased went to Boston about two years ago, and at the time of her death, lived with Dr. McAllister in Everett. | Friday, May 22, 1914 | Obituary - There passed peacefully away on Saturday morning, May 16th, after an illness of only six days, SARAH MERCER, widow of the late BENJAMIN MERCER, at the advanced age of 96 years and 7 months. She was therefore the oldest person living in Bay Roberts. Deceased belonged to a very long-lived family. Her grandfather lived to see the fourth generation, her mother the same, and herself likewise. Mrs. Mercer was the daughter of the late ISAAC and PATIENCE TRENCHARD. | On Monday evening, 20th inst., Mrs. ISAAC BOONE sent her little 5 year old daughter, MARGARET, on a message to a neighbour's house. After delivering her message the little one made her way to the public wharf, opposite the neighbour's dwelling and fell into the water. She was in a drowning position when HUBERT ALLEN ASH, a visitor to Bareneed, went down on the wharf alone to enjoy the game of catching little fish. There was no one to be seen around anywhere at the time as everyone was to tea. As he drew near the head of the wharf he heard something flapping in the water, and thinking it was caplin, as they were very plentiful around that day, he went and looked over where he heard the sound coming from and discovered that it was a little girl. He could not reach the child with his hand as she was too far off, but he took an oar from the wharf and tried to save the child but she was not able to catch it, so he pushed her in with the oar until he could reach her. Then holding a plank of the wharf in one hand he reached down the other and safely brought the little girl to land. The child sank to the bottom twice while he was trying to recover her but no one came to his assistance. The little girl has been very sick since. Her life was spared by the presence of mind of Hubert Ash who is but a child himself, only 9 years old. - July 23 - Correspondent. | |

Tom was picked up and carried to the Bellaventure in the nick of time, and on arrival at St. John's he was taken to the hospital. His hands and feet were badly frostbitten. He has had every toe amputated and his hands are gradually getting better. Mr. Dawson is otherwise feeling well. | |

| A Bad Accident - Mr. JOHN BOWERING, of Coley's Point, came within an inch of losing his life, when, on Friday last, in his mill at Ocean Pond while engaged making clapboard, a piece of the board, which was slow in being pulled through the machine, was hurled with terrific force against the man's face, cutting a gash right through the flesh extending in a zig-zag way from the temple to the mouth. He was knocked down by the force of the blow and rendered unconscious, while blood flowed in streams from the gaping wound. So bad was it that Mr. Bowering's teeth could be seen through the torn opening in the face. His son, Hayward, immediately got the horse and carriage ready and drove with all possible haste to Dr. Procunier at Clarke' s Beach. By that time Mr. Bowering had lost a great quantity of blood and was very weak. The doctor put a umber of stitches in the cut and subsequently the sufferer was driven home. His face is terribly swollen, and his food has to be administered to him only in liquid form. He is being attended by Dr. McLeod and is now regaining his strength. | |
| Death - A message was received by Mr. JOHN SHEARS MERCER Monday morning last, conveying the sad news that his brother, EUGENE MERCER, had met with a fatal drowning accident. It is thought he was halibut fishing when he met his death. | |

| Friday, October 23, 1914 | Woman Shot - Word was received here on Thursday morning that Mrs. MARIA BROWN, who was living with a family at Grand Falls, was accidentally shot. The bullet was fired from a 22 gauge rifle and passed through the hand and entered the body. She was taken to the hospital and on Thursday it was reported no complications had set in and her speedy recovery was pretty certain. |

He was seen to fall by Mr. Geo. Porter, who hastened to his side and assisted him to his home; but before reaching there the spark of life had fled. For the past few years he had been troubled with heart disease. The deceased was 76 years of age. | Naval Volunteers from Port de Grave and Bareneed: MAXWELL ANDREWS, son of Mr. R.H. Andrews, of Port de Grave has shown the right kind of stuff by volunteering for the Navy. MAX BARTLETT, son of Mr. Sam Bartlett, of Port de Grave, also volunteered and had all but got past the Examiners when he unfortunately opened his mouth and disclosed a set of dentist's teeth. | Disaster on Labrador - Dr. Hare, of the Grenfell Hospital at Harrington, Labrador, writing on Nov. 24th to Prof. H.A. Smith, of the Methodist College at Halifax, reports that on Nov. 18th several men from Harrington rode to a cape near there to shoot birds and a seal or two, if possible. The day was fine when they started, but without warning a N.W. storm was swept down and before they could regain shelter it raged to a hurricane blowing 84 miles an hour. Some of the boats were got back safely but three men perished - ALBERT RANSON, leaving a wife and child; ENOS COX, leaving a wife and four children; and JAMES HERRIT, an orphan boy. | |

| Friday, September 3, 1915 | Found Dead - The body of the man which was found near the railway tracks at Clark's Beach last Friday night has been identified as that of JAMES MUGFORD, a fisherman, of Sandy Cove, Port de Grave. He was returning from the Labrador in a sick condition. He landed from the steamer at Hr. Grace and bought his ticket for Clarke's Beach. He was brought beyond Clarke's Beach to Hueville station. Getting off there he started out to return. Feeling rather weak he visited a house and obtained a cup of tea. Leaving the house he started off to look for a cabman to drive him home, and while doing so he died from exhaustion. An investigation into the circumstances of the poor man's death is being conducted. |

| Friday, February 18, 1916 | Obituary - MRS. ELIZABETH BELBIN who died recently was the daughter of the late Isaac and Patience TRENCHARD who came from Wareham County of Dorset, England. She was taken at the age of 4 and adopted by her aunt, an old lady that was well known by the past generations as Aunt Lizzie SQUIRES, who did her best to bring her up in the fear of God. At the age of 11 she was converted. For over 50 years she held cottage prayer meetings. In her early married days she was often known to walk to the old Methodist Church twice on Sundays from Country Road, and many a time, with a few more devout Christian women, would row a boat to Port de Grave, and bring over the minister as there was no Methodist clergyman stationed at Bay Roberts. A few weeks before she passed away she knit a pair of socks for the soldiers. Her intellect was good. A few hours before she passed away, she recited verses she learnt when a girl in Sunday School. She leaves to mourn 3 sons, 22 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. |

| Dies of Wounds - 'Regret to inform you that Record Office Nfld. Regiment, London, today reports that the Tenth General Hospital, Rouen, reports that your son, No. 1449 Private GEORGE G. CROSBIE died of wounds out of hospital July 4. J.R. Bennett, Col. Secy.' The above is a copy of the message received by Mrs. Walter Crosbie on Monday last, informing her of the death of her son. Private George Graham Crosbie was the eldest son of Walter and Minnie Crosbie, of Bay Roberts West. He was but 17 years of age when he enlisted, and barely 18 at the time of his death. | |

Dick is the son of Mrs. A. Ryan who once conducted the Seaview Hjotel here and was a general favourite with the town people. | |
| Friday, August 18, 1916 | OWEN CHIPMAN who was injured by the falling of derrick at the American Thread Co.'s plant Monday, died in St. Joseph's Hospital on Monday. His remains were moved to the morgue of Eugene E. Hickey. This morning his brother, Absalom Chipman, arrived from Boston and made arrangements for his body to be sent to Spaniard's Bay for burial, where service will be held one week from today in Trinity Church, Spaniard's Bay.
